The Empowering History of Cazoo Baskonia
Cazoo Baskonia, now a club known worldwide to fans, initially wasn't a large Euro League club. The club was initially founded in 1959, but didn't make it to the top league until 1970, which was founded ten years before (Turkish Airlines Euro League). While it may have taken some time to reach the Euro League it took even longer to reach their first trophy. The clubs first silverware came in 1995 when they won the Copa Del Ray. This marks a historic part for club history. Not only did the club get its trophy, but the club would later go on to be dominant in the next six years (Turkish Airlines Euro League). From then the club continues to fear opposing teams and competes at the top level of Euro League.
While the history of Cazoo Baskonia is fascinating to know, it is also important to note the importance of the club with Basque culture. As most Spaniards and Europeans know, Basque people are incredibly passionate about their culture and what they represent (Turkish Airlines Euro League). Similarly, they feel the same way about Cazoo Baskonia. When Cazoo plays, Basque people believe it is a chance for their team to show Europe what they are made of. They believe it is a chance to beat down on other teams and show how strong Basque culture is. While some may believe it is just a sporting event, Basque people do not. The passion and history involved within Cazoo Baskonia makes it the most interesting and exciting team to watch in Euro League.
What Euro League teams do you believe are the most exciting to watch, given their history and passion? Let us know below. In addition to this here is another article discussing Baskonia's curent strong start to the season.

My personal favorite team to watch in the EuroLeague is FC Barcelona, as they have one of my favorite EuroLeague player (Nikola Mirotic) on their squad. Beyond that, other exciting teams lately have been the Maccabi team (due to their high level of attendance at games), Real Madrid (given their dedicated fanbase via social media), and Fenerbahçe Basketball (since they were founded 110 years ago and still have a strong following/success in the league).
ReplyDeleteAwesome to hear that Barcelona is your favorites team.
DeleteIt is an awesome feeling to have your fans behind you, even through decades of poor performance. This reminded me of when we went to Barcelona euro league game, and I was shocked as to how much passion the fans truely had. Thus I would say Barcelona is my favorite euro league team as I am living here, and the passion I mentioned was a great feeling. I also found the connection to Basque country truely unique and powerful, given the polarizing aspects of spanish culture, and how they liken their sports team to that of pride from their area of spain. Great job!
ReplyDeleteThe history of any sports team reveals more them just how and why a team was started. It is interesting to see that same idea with Cazoo Baskonia. Making a comparison to another team in Spain that I know, FC Barça, looking at their history you can also see the reason for particular fan support as well as the culture being so deeply rooted in everything including their sports teams. The history is what helps fans connect and people who are interested in learning more about EuroLeague, like me, to be able to understand why the sport and fans are support teams in such a passionate way.
ReplyDeleteYes I agree. It is so fascinating to learn about the passion behind every team.
DeleteI do not watch much Euroleague basketball but when Luca Doncic played, I watched a good amount of Real Madrid. I can definitely say I did not treat the games the same as the Basque do. I think it is really cool how they treat it as more than a game and I think that gives them some unique sponsorship and advertisement opportunities.
ReplyDeleteThat is a very late timeframe to have their first trophy, especially for a club that started when most other teams did. It seems as though Kazoo is the newest "player" in Euroleague basketball. It is always dangerous when a team comes in that does not have a long history because you never really know what to expect. going to your question, my personal favorite Euroleague team to watch is FC Barcelona. I have only been to one of their games, but I really enjoyed watching.
ReplyDeleteI have always enjoyed watching Real Madrid in the EuroLeague because they have produced a lot of massive talent. One example of this is Luka Doncic. He started with Madrid when he was only 13 years old and is now one of the very best players in the NBA and in the world. Do you think Cazoo has any players that could possibly make the step to the next level in the NBA?
ReplyDeleteIt clearly seems as if Baskonia has a strong sense of pride in their team. The team acts as a symbol for the rest of the country. It makes me think of the stadium lesson we had in class. Does this sense of pride increase the atmosphere at the games?
ReplyDeleteMy personal favorite team to watch is FC Barcelona. Not only is Nikola Mirotic one of my favorite players, but the atmosphere is unbelievable. I still cant fathom how loud it was when I attended a game in person last month.
ReplyDeleteCSKA Moscow and Maccabi Tel Aviv are known for their dominance in the league, with multiple championship wins. Alternatively, Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul and Anadolu Efes Istanbul are known for their strong performances in recent seasons, making them exciting to watch. Overall, every team in Euro League has its own unique history and fan base, making each one exciting to follow.
ReplyDeleteI did not watch many Euro league games before coming to Barcelona, but I did really enjoy the FC Barcelona game. I think that the whole environment was really different than the game in the NBA. Personally, I prefer the NBA a little bit better, but I do like how the fans all come together and really are a community.
ReplyDeleteI think Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and Panathinaikos are some of the most successful and storied teams in Euro League history. Real Madrid has won the competition a record 10 times, while FC Barcelona and Panathinaikos have each won it 3 times. All three teams have a rich history and passionate fan bases that make them exciting to watch. Additionally, teams like CSKA Moscow, Fenerbahce, and Anadolu Efes have also been successful and have passionate fans that make them exciting to follow in the Euro League.
ReplyDeleteIts awesome to see how important sports teams can be in European culture. To most U.S. fans, their favorite sports team doesn't necessarily reflect their own cultural identity. For Baskonia, the team is a direct part of the culture and fans feel that the team represents the Basque people. I personally think that milano or barcelona are the most entertaining teams to watch in the Euro League because they have the most former NBA talent.
